Sailors have used storm glasses to predict the weather for centuries. In the 19th century they also greatly helped Charles Darwin's expeditions in South America. Vice-admiral of HMS Beagle Robert FitzRoy, an amateur meteorologist and the creator of the word "forecast", carefully documented the crystals of the storm glass and the weather that would follow.
