The rollerball combines the characteristics of the ballpoint pen and the fountain pen, but is preferred for its smoother writing and lower pressure needed when writing compared to a ballpoint pen, because it uses liquid ink or gel-based pigment. The nature of these inks, which tend to soak into the paper more quickly and deeply compared to other types of ink, gives rollerballs their characteristic writing qualities. Most rollerballs have no on/off mechanism, i.e. they are permanently on, but have a protective cap that prevents accidental ink leakage, etc.
